Tips for making healthy Christmas cakes

Everyone knows that cakes are an important part of Christmas. So instead of indulging on heavy and unhealthy cakes from stores, why not make and eat healthy cakes this Christmas? You can make a healthy cake of whole-wheat flour, organic butter and sugar and free range eggs that are as tasty and soft as a cake from a store.

Moreover, all these ingredients are available in a supermarket and don’t take too long to do. And to make things easier, I advise you to double the quantities for the cakes so that you make two cakes, and then freeze one for future use.

Cakes that made at home are healthy cakes not because that have less sugar, but because they also have less food additives like unhealthy Trans fats than commercial cakes. Home made cakes are always sized rightly, and go a bit longer in the family.

Make cakes using more of nuts and fruits

When making Christmas cakes at home, choose recipes that use more of nuts, vegetables and fruits to get more fruits and vegetables in your diet. Even cakes made using dried fruits are excellent choices for Christmas, and perfect for lunch boxes.

While making healthy Christmas cakes at home, concentrate on using more good and wholesome ingredients in them like sugar, oats, candied and dried fruits, fresh fruits, flour, eggs, milk and butter.

Avoid using soft margarines while making cakes as most of them; especially cheaper versions have hydrogenated vegetable oils. If you use these oils in making your cakes, you defeat the purpose of making your own cakes this Christmas. Instead, you could use softened butter in your recipes instead of margarine.
